About Ascot racetrack:
Circumference is 2022 metres, length of the home straight is 294 metres. Racing is in an anti-clockwise direction.
Characteristics: one of the smaller courses in Australia, inside barriers are an advantage as there is little time to make up ground in the home straight so winners are often those in the leading division. Temperatures in Perth can often be very warm and some horses handle this better than others.
Ascot Barriers Starting Positions:
1100m: Straight run of 400m before the home turn, inside barriers had a distinct advantage.
1100m & 1200m: Starts in a small chute at the back of the course. Inside barriers have an advantage but it can be possible to win when drawn wide if the horse is capable of starting quickly and heading to the front.
1400m & 1500m: Located in a chute off the course proper, short run to the first turn so inside barriers have a big advantage.
1600m: Barriers are placed in a chute of the course proper, run of about 300m to the first turn. Inside barriers have a slight advantage.
1800m: Starts on the course proper with a run of around 300m to the first turn. Inside barriers a slight advantage.
2100m & 2200m: Barriers placed just before the winning post in the home straight, short run to the first turn and it is important to gain a good position early at this track. Inside barriers have a big advantage.
2400m: Begins in a short extension at the top of the home straight. Barriers are of little importance due to the distance involved.
3200m: Only one race over this distance, the Perth Cup. Barriers of no relevance.
