The Race: Dating back to 1861, the Champagne Stakes is the feature race on third day of racing at Randwick during The Championships. A Group 1 race for 2yo, the distance was extended to a mile in 1972 creating a natural progression for runners who may have competed in the 1200m Golden Slipper in March. A horse who wins the Golden Slipper, Sires Produce and the Champagne Stakes takes the Juvenile Triple Crown.
Winners of the Triple Crown: Baguette (1970), Luskin Star (1977) Tierce (1991), Burst (1992), Dance Hero (2004), Pierro (2012).
Best Lead Up Race: Blue Diamond, Golden Slipper, Breeders Stakes, Sires Produce.

Track Bias, Barriers: The 1600m start is located in a chute off the back straight. Long run before the first turn but the rail is usually out a significant distance for the third week of consecutive racing at this track. Will be hard for the backmarkers to make up a lot of ground on the leaders but barriers are usually of little importance as fields are limited.
