The race: feature of the Autumn Racing Carnival in Melbourne held at Flemington on Super Saturday. Since becoming a WFA event in 1987, the Australian Cup has produced some high class winners including Vo Rogue (1989 & 1990), Better Loosen Up (1991), Let's Elope (1992), Veandercross (1993), Durbridge (1994), Saintly (1996), Octagonal (1997), Dane Ripper (1998), Intergaze (2000), Northerly (2001 & 2003), Lonhro (2004), Makybe Diva (2005), Zipping (2010, Fiorente (2014).
Best lead-up form: The Orr Stakes and the St. George Stakes have been the best form races for the Australian Cup, with many winners using them as their lead-up races. Other races of interest include the MRC Autumn Classic & Futurity Stakes.
Time: Track record for the Flemington 2000m is 1:58.73, recorded by Melbourne Cup Champion Makybe Diva in this race in 2005.
Australian Cup - Melbourne Cup Double since 1987: 1991 Melbourne Cup winner Let's Elope won the following Australian Cup in 1992, Makybe Diva 2005 (same year), Saintly 1996 (same year), 2013 Melbourne Cup winner Fiorente won the 2014 Australian Cup.
The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. Most runners will have their chance, even when the rail is out. The 2000m start is situated on the right hand side of the course, past the turn after the winning post. There is a long straight run until the first corner, barriers are of little importance. Difficult to lead all the way given the WFA conditions in this race and the long home straight.
