Caulfield Racecourse Map & Barriers Guide:
About Caulfield racetrack:
Circumference is 2080 metres, length of the home straight is 367 metres. The grass is kept long and lush at this track so usually on the softer side of Good and often rated Dead. After heavy rain, the conditions can become very sticky and runners will usually avoid the ground near the inside fence, particularly when the rail is out 3 metres or more. Direction of racing is anti-clockwise.
Characteristics: there are five turns at Caulfield with a shorter home straight than Sandown and Flemington, has more in common with the turning circuit of Moonee Valley. When the rail is True there is little bias at the track and most runners will have their chance in the home straight. When the rail is out 3 - 5 metres, there is a slight advantage to the on pace runners, when placed out 6 metres or more there is a distinct advantage to racing in the leading division and inside barriers are preferred.
Caulfield Barriers Starting Positions:
1000, 1100m & 1200m metre starts: Barrier stalls are located at the top on a long straight chute on the left hand side of the course. Barriers are of little importance, but it is an advantage to begin well and race in the leading division.
1400m: Starts in a short chute off the back of the course just before a turn. Runners who take a forward position before the 1200m mark will have an advantage. It is possible to make ground before the home turn when the rail is True, when positioned out 5 metres or more those racing too far back before entering the home straight will have their work cut out in the home straight.
1600m: There is a straight run of 400 metres before the turn, generally quite fair but racing on the pace is an advantage when the rail is out.
1700m & 1800m: Similar to 1600m start with most runners having their chance.
2000m: Located just after the winning post on the right hand side of the course. Should be fair, but inside barriers seem to be an advantage as those drawn wide must work hard to gain a good position.
2400m: The Caulfield Cup start. Ideal barriers are inside stall 10. The start is located at the top of the home straight, there is a run of approx. 300m before the first turn. Those drawn wide must hustle forward early to gain a good position, this makes it difficult for horses carrying the higher weights if they are not drawn well. Racing in the first half of the field is preferred, as it is hard to make ground from too far back, especially when the rail is out 6 metres or more - as it often is for the Caulfield Cup.
