The Race: While the Melbourne Cup provides historic winners, the Cox Plate is known as a race for true Champions including the likes of Phar Lap (1930 & '31), Rising Fast (1954), Tulloch (1960), Tobin Bronze (1966 & '67), Kingston Town (1980, '81 & '82), Better Loosen Up (1990), Super Impose (1992), Saintly (1996), Might And Power (1998), Sunline (1999 & 2000), Northerly (2001 &'02), Fields of Omagh (2003 & '06) Makybe Diva (2005), So You Think (2009 & '10), Winx (2015, '16, '17 & '18)

The Track: Moonee Valley is a tight velodrome circuit, on pace runners have a distinct advantage and drawing an inside gate is ideal. A track for specialists, some horses do not race well here so look for runners with previous wins at this course.
Cox Plate Track Bias, Barriers: Ideal racing position at this track is just behind the leaders, one off the fence. A good barrier draw assists in all races, but is of less importance in the Cox Plate due to the distance involved. Horses must make their run mid-race to gain a good position before the home turn or wait for a lucky run either on the inside fence or out wide.
Weight Statistics: run under set Weight For Age conditions, most winners have been mature male horses while a few exceptionally good staying mares have also made their mark. Entry to the Cox Plate is by invitation and in recent years the committee has used their discretionary powers to allow more 3yo horses into the field, they have a distinct advantage carrying a good deal less weight than their older rivals.
