The 2018 Emirates Stakes
The Race: first run in 1869, the Emirates Stakes was previously scheduled on Victoria Derby Day as the Mackinnon. Trainers with horses aiming for the Melbourne Cup would often run in this as there was no additional handicap for a win but the first three across the line were exempt from being balloted out of the Cup. Many famous racehorses, including Rain Lover and Phar Lap, won the Mackinnon-Melbourne Cup Double. The last horse to complete the double was Rogan Josh in 1999, while the last to run and finish in the Melbourne Cup placings was So You Think in 2010.
Training techniques have changed over time and running a Melbourne Cup horse on Saturday no longer appeals to the majority of modern trainers. Run under Weight For Age conditions over 2000m (similar to the Australian Cup also run at this track), the race may appeal more to horses who had been aimed at the Cox Plate 2 weeks prior. Prize money was doubled and the previously underrated Mackinnon Stakes became the feature race of the final day of racing at Flemington during Melbourne Cup Week, while the 1600m WFA Cantala Stakes (previously known as the Emirates Stakes) was moved to Derby Day.

Time: Track record for 2000m at Flemington is 1:58.73 Makybe Diva.
Support Races: racing at Flemington on the same day includes the Darley Classic, Maribyrnong Plate, Queen Elizabeth.
Track Bias: Flemington is a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. The rail will usually be positioned a few metres out from the normal (True) position for the fourth day of racing at this track in a week, however there is usually little bias exhibited here when the track is dry. The 2000m start is situated on the right hand side of the course, past the turn after the winning post. There is a long straight run until the first corner, barriers are of little importance. Difficult to lead all the way given the WFA conditions in this race and the long home straight.
