About Flemington racetrack: With a sweeping turn into the wide home straight, the circumference of the course is 2312 metres. Fields can be large, averaging 8 - 15 runners per race. The maximum number of runners is 24.
GoingStick: Since 2016 the track reports from Flemington have been based on information from the GoingStick, which measures the penetration resistance of the surface to a depth of 100mm and the shear strength of the rootzone in a way that mimics the action of a galloping horse. The penetration and shear measurements are taken three times at various waypoints around the course. The GoingStick then creates a mean value from the measurements which creates a value of going based on a 15 point index. An average reading of 3.0-6.9 indicate softer ground, 7.0-8.9 is good ground and anything above 9 is considered firm. The most common average rating for Flemington is 9.5, shear rating 12.
Flemington Barriers Starting Positions:
1000, 1100m & 1200m starts: Barrier stalls are located in the centre of the course in a chute off the home straight, horses have a straight run to the winning post. Outside barriers have a slight advantage in large fields, runners often head to the outside rail when the inside rail is positioned out 8 metres or more.
1400m: Starts in a chute at the back of the course. Runners race on an angled turn until they reach the home straight. Inside barriers have a slight advantage.
1600m: Barriers are located in a small chute off the course proper. Runners are on a curved turn until they reach the home straight. Inside barriers have an advantage, particularly in large fields and when the rail is out.
1800m: Barriers are located on the course proper, there is a short run to the first turn, inside barriers have a slight advantage.
2000m: Starts on the course proper at the back of the course, straight run of around 600m before the first corner, barriers are of little importance.
2500m: Starts on the course proper in front of the grandstand in the home straight. Barriers are of no importance.
3200m: Melbourne Cup start. Barrier stalls are located just after the 1000m start, offering runners a straight run of 900m before the first corner. Barriers are not of great importance due to the distance involved, although in a maximum field of 24 drawing a gate between 2 and 12 is usually preferred.
