Race History: Run over 2500m since 1972. Originally the Hotham Handicap and was the Saab Quality up until 2009 when renamed The Lexus. While it is an excellent race in its own right it also is the last chance for horses trying to get a spot in the Melbourne Cup field who need to get a weight penalty to do it. Shocking won the double in 2009 while Maluckyday 2010 and Niwot 2011 qualified for a run the Cup in this race but just missed out on the big prize due to the quick back-up the following Tuesday.

Weight Statistics: A few horses carrying over 56kgs have won but the majority of winners come from lighter weighted horses carrying 50kgs to 55kgs. Horses who are outside the weight ballot for the Melbourne Cup can gain an automatic entry from a win in this race and as a result usually carry a low weight when going on to win the two mile handicap - Shocking carried 51kg, Brew carried 49kg.
Track Bias: no significant track bias when the track is dry and horses usually have an even chance to finish the race off down the long Flemington straight.
