The 2018 Makybe Diva Stakes
The Race: First run in 1948 and known as the Craiglee Stakes until 2007 when the name was changed to honour the only horse to win three consecutive Melbourne Cups - Makybe Diva. Upgraded in 2013 to Group 1 status this is regarded as an ideal lead up to the main Spring Carnival events.
While many winners have gone on to win one of the majors, many place-getters have also won or run well in the Turnbull Stakes, Caulfield Cup or Cox Plate as in the case of Northerly who won all three in 2002 and Elvstroem who was second in this race in 2004 before winning the Turnbull Stakes & Caulfield Cup. The last winner of the Makybe Diva Stakes to win the Melbourne Cup was Jeune in 1994.

Track Bias, Barriers: The 1600m start is in a chute with only a short run to the big sweeping curve leading into the long final straight. Barriers are of little significance as the rail is usually in the True position and the long straight gives the fittest and fastest horses the chance to run down the leaders.
