The 2020 Melbourne Cup
Melbourne Cup Winners: since first being run in 1861, every horse to win the Melbourne Cup has become a part of Australian history. A few horses have won two Melbourne Cups, however only one horse has won the Cup in three successive years - Makybe Diva.
Best Melbourne Cup Form Lead Up Races: The Caulfield Cup (2400m), approx. two thirds of Melbourne Cup runners have also started in the same year's Caulfield Cup. Other lead up races to note are the Cox Plate (Moonee Valley, 2000m), Geelong Cup (2400m), Mackinnon Stakes (Flemington 2000m) & Lexus Stakes (Flemington 2500m)
Multiple Melbourne Cup winners: Makybe Diva (2003/04/05), Think Big (1974/75), Rain Lover (1968/69), Peter Pan (1932/34), Archer (1861/62)
The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. Most runners will have their chance in the home straight, even when the rail is out.
Melbourne Cup Track Bias, Barriers: The 3200m begins in a chute at the left hand side of the course leading in to the home straight. Maximum field is 24 runners with no emergencies. Barriers of little importance due to the distance involved. Difficult to lead all the way, fitness and weight are critical factors in the concluding stages.
Melbourne Cup Weight Statistics: Rarely won by a top weight, the last was the exceptional mare Makybe Diva who carried the Number 1 saddlecloth and 58kgs to victory in 2005. No horse has carried more than 58kgs since Think Big in 1975 (58.5kgs). Majority of winners are 4, 5 or 6 year old males carrying 52kgs - 55kgs. 3yo colts & geldings can be competitive due to their light weight. Rekindled won as a northern hemisphere 3yo in 2017.
