Feature Race, Barriers Info & Starting Positions:
Referred to by locals as Cluden Park and operated by the Townsville Turf Club, they have been racing here since 1866 - the club's inaugural President was Robert Towns, the founder of Townsville. The Townsville Cup takes place in July with balmy winter temperatures usually in the low to mid 20’s and 12,000 people at the track in all their finery.
The track is a pear shape about 1700m circumference, with the 1000m start at the beginning of the largest of the 2 corners. Horses can lead from an inside barrier and follow the rail all the way home. In the longer distances it can certainly help to be in the leading group going into this final turn as the short final straight makes it hard for backmarkers to make up ground, it is possible to lead all the way.
