Race History: ‘The Oaks’ was first run in 1861, as was the Melbourne Cup, and is staged two days later on the Thursday during Melbourne Cup Week. While Melbourne Cup Day is a public holiday in Victoria, Oaks Day (Ladies Day) is a working day, although many Melbournians take the day off due to a rare 24 hour virus known as Oaks disease. The day features Fashions on the Field Finals and a general air of girlish fun and frivolity, all the beautiful people are there and the young gentlemen also flock to the track to keep an eye on things. For this reason it is often more accurately referred to as Blokes’ Day. The quality of racing on this day is very good, the feature race being a fillies-only version of the Victoria Derby.

The Track: Flemington is racing headquarters in Victoria, a spacious track with sweeping turns and a long home straight. On Oaks day the rail is often moved out after racing on Melbourne Cup day two days before, if the ground is Dead or worse we often see them avoiding the inside fence and heading to the centre of the track in search of better ground.
Track Bias, Barriers: The 2500m start is situated just before the first turn in front of the grandstand in the home straight. An inside barrier is an advantage, particularly since the rail is out. However it is difficult to lead all the way due to the distance involved.
